WESTFIELD — More than 50 participants came out in support of the Why We Dance 2012 event at the Westfield Y on March 24.

Nicholas Abreu led an hour-long dance class that included Salsa and Merengue and B-boy Hip-Hop. He delighted the crowds with a dance battle with Joy S. Jackson who led a Rhythm and Soul Hip-Hop class. Local businesses provided the refreshments and giveaways.

This is the fourth annual Why We Dance event and this program is funded by a Union County HEART Grant. This was a free program that included free weekly dance classes and the dance festival.

“I am happy with the turnout, the support of the community and businesses who donated school supplies and food items for this event,” said Candace Waller.

Waller coordinates the events and teaches the dance classes. “I was so proud of the performance by the students who participated in the weekly classes. We only met for a few weeks but they really did a great job. I am looking forward to next year.”
