CLARK — Jennifer Viti, Supervisor of Language Arts and the Humanities for the Clark Public Schools, presented a slideshow of personal photographs taken during a summer trip to Eastern Europe to sixth grade students at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School. The students recently completed their study of the Holocaust novel “Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry and were interesting in hearing more about the concentration camps and ghettos they learned about in the novel.
Several summers ago, Viti had the opportunity to travel to the sites of many camps and ghettos throughout Europe through a grant offered by the New Jersey Holocaust Commission. During her two and a half-week trip, Viti photographed these different locations and upon her return, she developed a slideshow presentation to use with future students.
During her presentation to the Kumpf sixth graders, Viti shared her experiences in Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Holland. The students had a lot of questions and Viti has made subsequent visits to their classrooms to continue discussions based on the presentation.
