ELIZABETH-Wonderful Eastertime memories at Levy Brothers from Ed Levy: “Easter was a wonderful time for Levy Brothers back in the 1950s they always had an Easter Bunny in the store for the children to come and see. He would give the kids gifts and it was truly a fun event for the kids to visit with the Easter Bunny. Interestingly, the way in which they celebrated the arrival of the Easter Bunny to the store was very spectacular. Since my father was in charge of that event he really did it in a very dramatic way. He would hire a helicopter service to bring in the Easter Bunny and land in an open field area off of North Avenue and Morris Avenue.
“There was a lot of fanfare in the event. In those days that area of Elizabeth was not developed; as it was open field. He then would have the Bunny sit in the back of a convertible car and they would drive into downtown Elizabeth and park in front of the store. Since it was advertised in the Elizabeth Daily Journal and on the radio, there would be hundreds of children with their parents waiting for the arrival in front of the store.
“It was a real celebration. Also it was the beginning of spring so the warmer weather added to the overall good feeling that prevailed.”
