SCOTCH PLAINS – A monthly Support Group for people with fibromyalgia begins May 3 at 7 p.m. at the RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center in Scotch Plains.
Fibromyalgia, characterized by fatigue and widespread muscle and joint pain, is often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. More than 12 million Americans share the condition, with the majority being women between the ages of 25 and 60. While there is no cure, great strides have been made helping people manage its physical and emotional aspects.
“This support group will provide members a sense of empowerment and mastery, shared support from those who understand, plus updated information and resources,” said Mindy Cohen, a licensed Psychiatric Advanced Practice Nurse who will facilitate the group. Ms. Cohen holds certifications in group psychotherapy through the American Group Psychotherapy Association, crisis counseling through the New Jersey Mental Health Association and addiction certification through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board.
The Fibromyalgia Support Group will meet the first Thursday of each month at the Fitness Center, located at 2120 Lamberts Mill Road, Scotch Plains. It is free. For more information, contact Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway’s Community Education Department at 1-732-499-6193.
