Calixto Collects NJAC Rookie Hitter Of The Week Honors

PITMAN — New Jersey City University freshman third baseman Nicole Calixto of Elizabeth has been selected as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie Hitter of the Week for week five of the 2012 season.

Calixto is the first NJCU freshman to receive NJAC Rookie of the Week honors since 2010. She hit safely in all four games for the Gothic Knights in a 3-1 week of results. The first-year player hit .500 (6-12) with two runs, one RBI and a double and added a walk for a .538 on-base percentage. Defensively, she had a .583 slugging rate and one stolen base and was perfect in 18 chances at the hot corner. She raised her season batting average 72 points during the week.

On March 28 when NJCU split a doubleheader at Brooklyn College, losing the opener, 10-7 before taking the nightcap, 5-3, Calixto had two hits in both games of the twin bill, adding a double and run in game one and one RBI in game two. She had a single and stolen base before scoring on a passed ball in the third inning of game one. She led off the seventh inning of game one with a single but NJCU could not drive her in. She had a second inning single in game two and her RBI single up the middle in the fifth inning pushed home the eventual winning run for a 4-2 lead.

On March 29, she was 1-for-3 in game one against St. Joseph’s College (LI) before going 1-for-3 with a run in game two as the Knights swept the home doubleheader, 3-2 and 6-5. In game two, she had a single that rolled past the right fielder and helped score the third run of a four-run first inning before crossing the plate herself with the fourth run.

On the season in 18 games (18 starts), Calixto is hitting .228 (13-57) with nine runs, four RBIs, two doubles and six walks and is 4-for-4 in steals. She has a .308 on-base percentage and is fielding .932 in 88 chances at third.
