Volunteers Thanked For Efforts Against Pancreatic Cancer

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and I would like to take a moment to sincerely thank all of our volunteers with the Northern New Jersey Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, the national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure for all their hard work and support.

The award-winning Northern New Jersey Affiliate has relied on its amazing group of volunteers to host numerous events and raise over $500,000 since the affiliate’s inception five years ago. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death. There are no early detection tools, few effective treatment options and there is no cure. Despite these statistics, research into this deadly disease is severely under-funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), with approximately two percent of its funding dedicated to pancreatic cancer research.

Nearly ten years ago, I lost my father to pancreatic cancer. He was diagnosed in June 2001 and lost his battle in about a year. Since my father died, not much has changed in the survival rates for this insidious disease. As more resources and volunteers join the fight, I am confident the right steps will be taken to end pancreatic cancer as we know it.

To all of those who utilize their valuable resources to embrace and assist those who are battling pancreatic cancer now and in the future, I thank you for making a difference in this fight. To find out how you can be involved, visit www.pancan.org/newjersey.

Together we can make a difference.
