CRANFORD—The Readers’ Forum, the book discussion group of the Cranford Public Library, will meet next on Monday, April 23, at 7 p.m. The group will discuss “State of Wonder,” a novel by Ann Patchett published in 2011.
In “State of Wonder,” Dr. Marina Singh, a research scientist with a pharmaceutical company, is sent to Brazil to track down her mentor, Dr. Annick Swenson. Dr. Swanson seems to have all but disappeared in the Amazon while working on what is destined to be an extremely valuable new drug, the development of which has already cost the company a fortune.
Nothing about Marina’s assignment is easy. Not only is Dr. Swanson missing, but the last person sent to find her, Marina’s research partner, Anders Eckman, died before he could complete his mission. Plagued by trepidation, Marina embarks on an odyssey into the insect-infested jungle in hopes of finding her former mentor, as well as answers to several troubling questions about her friend’s death, the state of her company’s future, and her own past.
Kirkus Review described “State of Wonder” as a “gripping novel of spiritual and metaphysical depth, right down to the final startling plot twist— thrilling, disturbing and moving in equal measures.”
The Readers’ Forum welcomes new members at any time. The library is located at 224 Walnut Avenue. For more information, please call the library at 1-908-709-7272 or send an email to email@example.com. The full Readers’ Forum schedule can be found on the web at cranford.com/library/special.asp.
