RAHWAY — “Come and meet those dancing feet, on the avenue I’m taking you to… 42nd Street.” Union County Performing Arts Center is the site where Rahway High School will present “42nd Street” on Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 1 at 2 p.m.
“42 Street” is a long-running Broadway musical that focuses on the efforts of Julian Marsh, the famous but dictatorial Broadway director, to mount a successful stage production of a musical extravaganza at the height of the Great Depression. The story line follows Peggy Sawyer, a starry-eyed young actress who comes to New York intending to audition for Marsh’s musical. In 1980, this musical won a Tony Award for Best Musical, in 2001 it won the Tony for Best Revival, and in 1934, it won the Olivier Award for Best Musical in London. The story has a long history, first as a novel by Bradford Ropes, then a film adaptation in 1933, and later in 1980, a book and musical by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble with lyrics by Al Dubin and music by Harry Warren.
Rahway High School’s director, Alison Dooley is excited by this production, saying, “I am very blessed to have the opportunity to share my passion for Song & Dance with the students of Rahway and truly thankful to those that support my efforts and theatrical endeavors.”
One of her all-time favorite quotes comes from Julian Marsh, a character in this show, who says, “I’m talking about musical comedy, the two most glorious words in the English language!” Dooley says that she could not agree with him more! “And the equally glorious embodiment of those two words is this little show, ‘42nd Street.’ Please come and enjoy our rendition!”
