SOUTH ORANGE – The Seton Hall men’s basketball team has earned a bid to participate in the 2012 National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The Pirates have earned a #1 seed and will host eighth-seeded Stony Brook (22-9) in the tournament’s first round on Tuesday, March 13 at 7:15 p.m. in Walsh Gymnasium on Seton Hall’s South Orange campus.
“Naturally, we’re disappointed not to receive an NCAA Tournament bid, but we’re going to take advantage of a great opportunity to extend our season and the impressive careers of our seniors in the NIT,” said Head Coach Kevin Willard. “I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished this season and we’re looking forward to getting back on the court on Tuesday.”
Seton Hall (20-12) will appear in the NIT for the 17th time in its history and second time in the last three seasons. The Pirates lost to Texas Tech in the first round of the NIT to close the 2009-10 season.
The Pirates are 7-17 all-time in the NIT, but has an NIT Championship. In 1953, the Pirates, led by legends Richie Regan and Walter Dukes, defeated St. John’s in the title game to claim the national championship.
Seton Hall has faced Stony Brook only twice, winning both contests. Most recently, the Pirates defeated the Seawolves, 71-78 on Dec. 31, 2002.
Should the Pirates defeat Stony Brook in the second round, they will face the winner of the game between #4 Mississippi State (21-11) and #5 Massachusetts (22-11) in the event’s second round.
