WOODBRIDGE – An off-duty Woodbridge police officer who was working an extra-duty job at the Woodbridge Center Shopping mall shot and killed a man who allegedly threatened a woman at knifepoint yesterday afternoon, authorities said.
According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Woodbridge Police Director Robert Hubner, authorities are actively investigating the fatal police shooting, which took place on Thursday afternoon at 5:15 p.m.
The Woodbridge Police Department preliminarily reported that an off-duty Woodbridge police officer, in uniform and working an extra-duty job at the mall, was dispatched to a store at the mall after receiving a report of a disturbance, the prosecutor’s office announced.
Woodbridge police further reported that upon the officer’s arrival, he observed an individual with a knife. The individual, upon observing the officer, fled, and a foot chase pursued.
After a brief pursuit, the suspect grabbed a female shopper and threatened her with a knife, according to the preliminary report by Woodbridge police.
Woodbridge police reported that after repeated warnings, the officer fired at the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman, whose name is being withheld, was not harmed.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is actively investigating the shooting and the circumstances leading up to it and has notified the state Office of the Attorney General, in accordance with state guidelines.
