ROSELLE PARK–“State by State, a personal journey through the United States”, a solo exhibit of photography by Roselle Park resident Brenda Calinawan, is on display at the Casano Center Art Gallery through April 20.

The gallery is located in the Casano Community Center, 314 Chestnut Street in Roselle Park. There will be a reception to meet the artist on Monday, March 26, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. The Casano Community Center and the Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday until 5 p.m.

The 14 photographs in this exhibit depict Calinawan’s travels throughout the United States. She focuses on nature and landscapes of the states that she has visited. Six years ago while traveling with friends, she became the group’s photographer, documenting their travels. These trips inspired her to take up photography and three years ago she started to seriously take photographs with her own digital camera. “As an occupational therapist visiting new places and taking photographs is my way to take a break from a very stressful job” she states.

The concept for this photographic series came from a person who had mentioned that he had visited 40 states, so Calinawan thought she’d do the same thing because she loves traveling. Calinawan’s personal plan is to visit the 50 states before she reaches 40. At 37, she’s visited approximately 30 states.

Serious about her hobby, she is taking courses through the New York Institute of Photography’s Distance Learning program. Calinawan exhibited her photographs of Roselle Park in the Casano Community Center Art Gallery’s “Winter in Roselle Park” group exhibit last year.

Calinawan says that “With this exhibit I want to share the photographs of the beautiful places that I have visited in this spectacular country.”

The Casano Community Center is located in downtown Roselle Park and is a gathering place for the whole Roselle Park community with programs for senior citizens during the day, and activities throughout the year for all ages. The mission of the Gallery is to give Roselle Park residents a venue to display their artistic works and connect with the community at large. The Art Gallery accepts work only from Roselle Park residents. Artwork must be two-dimensional, and no sculpture or jewelry will be accepted.
