RAHWAY — Franklin Elementary School in Rahway is kicking off its new character education initiative entitled “Peace, Love, and Franklin School”. To launch the program, the entire school united outside on Friday, March 2 and created a living peace sign.

Ben Franklin, the Cat in the Hat, and peace loving hippies were on the roof waving to the students. The students previewed a short video showing staff throughout the building giving the peace sign along with popular celebrities. The video gave the students ideas on how to make good character shine throughout the day.

Students will continue to practice their kindness and compassion by giving a peace sign to their peers when they exhibit one of the characteristics of good character. This will acknowledge the positive behavior and reinforce the overall goal and responsibility of making good choices-not because they are being rewarded for it, but because it’s the right thing to do.

Each month, the students will learn about a new trait and hear daily examples of how one can acquire the quality. Faculty and staff hope by instilling these values at an early age, it will transfer from adolescence into adulthood.
