ELIZABETH–Trinitas Regional Medical Center welcomed five Leap Year babies on the day that occurs only once every four years.

Guido Cortez and Magaly Cortez – Lopez of Elizabeth, shown with Perla Dominquez, RN, of the Maternal-Child Care unit at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, welcomed eight-pound, six-ounce daughter Bethany who joins a six-year-old brother. The proud mother calmly enjoyed her new infant while the proud father admitted that he was nervous during the delivery but was relieved that mother and baby were both fine.

Four other couples from Union County celebrated the arrivals of the remaining Leap Year babies, another two girls and two boys. Three of the five babies arrived approximately one week early. The five babies joined the approximately 12,300 babies born in the United States on Leap Year Day 2012.

At Trinitas Regional Medical Center, approximately 2400 babies are born each year.
