Remembering The Past: Union County Past Businesses

by Diane Norek Harrison

I am often give past material that I go through thoroughly, breaking it up into different towns and counties. Here are a few businesses I found recently:

PLAINFIELD-The Bridal Shop with Catherine McGrath was on Park Ave. in 1948. The Bridal Shop is a “favorite with smart brides-to-be from all over this area on north Jersey.” There was The Norwalk Vaulty Company in the 1920s and Tepper’s Department Store.

RAHWAY-In the 1960s there was Bergen Attic and Basement Company on Maple. Ave. and in the 1950s was Metchik Motors on St. George Ave., selling new DeSotos and Plymouths. Remember Rahway Chevrolet?

ELIZABETH-Have memories of the Twin City Skating Arena?

SPRINGFIELD-Karin’s Kurtains

My column is open to all towns in Union County to share your memories or past material. Please send summer, winter, Christmas, past businesses or school past info to be used throughout the year.

If you have your own memories of the past in Middlesex or Union counties, email me at or send copies of your material to me c/o CMD Media, 1139 East Jersey St., Suite 503, Elizabeth NJ, 07201
