Sharpton Speaks At Voter Mobilization Rally

ELIZABETH – Rev. Al Sharpton gave the keynote address at a voter mobilization rally at the New Hope Memorial Baptist Church last night.

Sharpton challenged urban voters to take on Republicans and rising GOP star Gov. Chris Christie. “He knows how strong you are,” Sharpton said. “The question is: Do you know how strong you are? If you bring out the numbers, Christie can’t go nowhere.”

The event was organized by Salaam Ismial, the director of the National United Youth Council, Inc. based in Elizabeth. It focused on issues of concern for urban voters, including jobs, housing, education and violence.

The event was attended by several local Democratic politicians.

Tributes were offered for singer Whitney Houston, former Soul Train host Don Cornelius and Tuskegee Airman and Elizabeth native Saleem Muhummad, who all died recently.
