State Theatre Announces Family Day Programs On Presidents Day

NEW BRUNSWICK—State Theatre will present the sixth annual Family Day on Monday, Feb. 20, featuring performances by Dan Zanes & Friends at 10:30 a.m. and The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus at 1 and 3:30 p.m. “Family Day at the State Theatre” is part of the Hub City Carnivale, a winter festival featuring four weeks of performances, participatory activities, social events, and special attractions for all ages.

Families can spend the school-day holiday enjoying dozens of performances, workshops, and hands-on activities—many of them free—plus costumed characters, the Philadelphia Zoo’s Zoo on Wheels, face painting, balloon animals, fire trucks from the New Brunswick Fire Department, D.A.R.E vehicles, the Colgate “Bright Smiles, Bright Futures” mobile dental van, a live DJ, food, and more. The festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., features multiple venues: the State Theatre, George Street Playhouse, Crossroads Theatre, and the popular Hub City Big Top, an enormous tent set up in front of the State Theatre.

In addition to the shows by Zanes and the The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus at the State Theatre, there will be free performances in Crossroads Theatre including storyteller Diane Macklin (noon, 3 p.m.); an interactive “Meet the Percussion” program by Princeton Symphony Orchestra (11 a.m. and 1 p.m.); and performances by the New Jersey Tap Dance Ensemble (10 a.m. and 2 p.m.). A variety of hands-on workshops take place throughout the day, including “Hand-in-Hand” (12:30 p.m.), “Intro to Ballet” (10:30 a.m.), and “Hip-Hop Dance” (3 p.m.), led by American Repertory Ballet; “Making Character Masks” (10:30 a.m.) and “Intro to Improv,” (1:30 p.m.), led by the George Street Playhouse; and “Make a Colorful Pinwheel” (10:30 a.m.), “Make a Tissue Box Guitar” (12:30 p.m.), “Make a Paper Plate Tambourine” (2:30 p.m.), “Paper-Bag Puppets” (11:30 a.m.), and “Make a Zoo Visor” (1:30 p.m.). Registration for all workshops is $6 and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling 1-732-246-7469, ext. 545.

Discounted tickets ranging from $5-20 are available for these performances as part of the State Theatre’s “Take5” promotion.
