RAHWAY – The state Election Law Enforcement Commission levied a $55,000 fine against the Rahway Democratic Committee, one of the largest penalties ever issued by the commission.

The Rahway Democratic Committee was charged with “late filing and non-filing of contribution and expenditure information, failure to file 48-hour notices, and late filing and non-filing of Political Party Committee – Designation of Organizational Treasurer and Depository forms (Forms D-3) during the 2006 and 2007 calendar years.”

The committee originally faced a penalty of $68,750, but the agreement reduced the amount to $55,000 and allows it to be paid in 20 installments of $2,475, with the final payment due before Jan. 17, 2017. If any payments are missed or are more than three days late, the entire $68,750 fine would become due at once.

Under the agreement, the committee neither confirms nor denies the allegations made in the complaint.
