jazzville skyline: “…soul long train…”

In the days before MTV and Mp3s, your outlet for music was a turntable and a transistor radio…

…and television had ‘musical’ shows with names like ‘Shindig’ and ‘Hullabaloo’…

But, of course, there was one king to these pretenders, and that was ‘American Bandstand’…

Dick Clark taught ‘Middle America’ how to dance…

But…on the other side of that same coin, another television programmer was reaching a different audience…one that already knew how to dance…

His name was Don Cornelius, and that program was ‘Soul Train’…

And the best of soul appeared and appealed to, not only a black audience, but an entire generation of music lovers with a groove…

And every week, Don would smile that ‘soul train’ smile and welcome us along for the ride…

But…through the years, the smile faded for Don…marital issues and problems with his health made the recent years difficult, and yesterday, he was found by the police, an apparent suicide…

Sometimes we may never know what truly lies behind the smile…or for that matter, within the ‘soul’…

As Don was famous for ending each show… “…peace, love, and soul…”

May he now rest in each…
