Plainfield Police Sgt. Charged With Sex Assault While On Duty

PLAINFIELD — A Plainfield Police sergeant was arrested last night and charged with fourth degree criminal sexual contact, Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow announced today.

Samuel Woody, a 12-year member of the force, was arrested in Plainfield on Jan. 31. According to an investigation by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Special Prosecutions Unit and the Plainfield Police Division Internal Affairs Unit, Woody allegedly assaulted a woman on July 24, 2011.

Woody was on duty and in uniform at the time of the alleged criminal sexual contact, said Romankow. It was reported to authorities on Jan. 11 and an investigation was immediately launched.

Woody, 41, of Plainfield was suspended from the force following his arrest. He was later released from custody after posting bail.

Woody is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
