ELIZABETH – Authorities were awaiting the results of DNA testing before they release the identity of the driver of a car who was killed yesterday morning when a two-door Mitsubishi crashed into a fuel tanker at the Bayway Circle intersection of Routes 1 and 9 in Elizabeth.
The Mitsubishi, which was registered to a Newark resident, was “almost immediately” engulfed in flames after the 1:39 a.m. collision, authorities said. The tanker truck’s driver escaped without injury.
Several nearby homes were evacuated while firefighters battled the blaze.
