Obituary: Marguerite J. ‘Peggy O’Neill’ Schaffer

Marguerite J. (Peggy O’Neill) Schaffer of Roselle Park and Bradley Beach died on Wednesday, Jan. 18, surrounded by her children and grandchildren, after a brief illness.

Engaged until the end of her 91 years “Mom” was active in democratic politics serving as a Committee Woman in Roselle Park for nearly 60 years. She was a member of the Borough’s Board of Health, Roselle Golf Club, St. Joseph’s Rosary Society and the Clio Club of Roselle Park. Her service to the Clio Club gave her great joy in selecting and awarding scholarships to deserving high school students.

The first and only child born to Peter Patrick and Isabelle O’Neill, she grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey where she met the love of her life Michael Francis Schaffer, her husband of 43 years who pre deceased her in 1984.

She was a devoted Mets fan who donned her rally cap when necessary to prod them to victory. As a young woman she excelled in sports and took up golf when her children were grown. Peggy O’Neill never met a stranger. She was an avid traveler who found friends in every port. She especially enjoyed visiting her many children and grandchildren around the country who never ceased to be amazed at how many of their neighbors became Mom’s friends.

She leaves her ten children: Michael Schaffer of Georgia (Janice), Richard Schaffer of Hawaii (Lisa), Peg Schaffer of Bedminster, Kathleen Barr of Hawaii (Ken), Patricia Tuma of Stewartsville (Bob) , Mary Stansell of Oregon (Les), Frank Schaffer of Jackson (Elizabeth), Carol Komondy of Basking Ridge (Michael), Joan Chaya of New York (Ken), and Peter Schaffer of Texas (Paula), each of whom was her “favorite”, twenty grandchildren and six great grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Betty Sweeney, many nieces and nephews and a cadre of friends.

Relatives and friends of Peggy are invited to pay their respects at the viewing on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue West, Cranford. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Saint Joseph the Carpenter Church in Roselle on Monday, Jan. 23, at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Clio Club of Roselle Park, care of Dooley Funeral Home.
