PERTH AMBOY – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and legacy will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 16, at Cathedral International church, 277 Madison Avenue.
The service will acknowledge the 2012 year as the 25th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., federal holiday. Participating in the service will be the Perth Amboy High School Chorale, the New Jersey Orators, Perth Amboy chapter, and the Kingdom Dancers of Cathedral International church.
The keynote speaker is Bishop Donald Hilliard, Jr., senior pastor of Cathedral International. In 2011, Hilliard celebrated 28 years as senior pastor of the church and has received numerous honors and acknowledgements for his exemplary leadership.
According to Hilliard, “I am thankful for the acknowledgements we have received. But one of the most humbling was the induction into the Martin Luther King, Jr., Board of Preachers at Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA.” He received the honor in 1995.
Dr. King was known for his ability to give people a sense of hope in distressful times. When negativity and fear were rampant, he would persuasively speak hope and optimism: “Somehow, I still believe we’re going to get there,” Dr. King would say. “Shall we say the odds are too great? Shall we tell them the struggle is too hard? Or will there be another message, of longing, of hope, of commitment?” The service at Cathedral will continue Dr. King’s message of hope, optimism and commitment. It’s a message that will inspire and empower the community.
