RAHWAY – Rather than give co-workers grab bag holiday presents, the Emergency Department staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway pooled their money and provide holiday cheer for a local family.

Emergency Department doctors, nurses, technicians, and support staff collected more than $400 for a local family identified by the Rahway Community Action Organization /JFK Community Center.

The money went toward Toys R Us gift cards for the children, as well as presents for the father and mother. “The response from staff was overwhelming,” said Charge Nurse Karen Vargas. “Everyone was eager and happy to do it.”

Each year hospital staff donates toys to local charitable organizations, but the Emergency Department decided to this as a department. “We usually buy grab bag presents for each other, but this year we thought, let’s help a local family,” said ED Tech Kim Blatt.

When contacted by the hospital, the father of the family said he had been worried about how he was going to get through this Christmas with not much in the way of gifts. “I was thinking about their faces on Christmas morning. But now we’ll have something for them. We are so appreciative.”
