CLARK — Books across America are annually nominated for the Newbery Awards and Caldecott Awards. This year at Valley Road School in Clark, the fifth graders in Kelly Cahill’s class created a new award called the Cahillcott Award. They have been studying several different story elements and techniques that have made certain authors’ books stand out to them.

The students chose categories that were studied and nominated books (based on examples from the text) for each category. From those nominees they voted and narrowed it down to three books per category. Then the ballots were sent to all fifth graders to vote on who they thought should win the award. An afternoon ceremony, attended by all the fifth graders, revealed the winners and gave the students the opportunity to dress up and celebrate the authors and books they enjoy reading.
