RAHWAY – The City Council voted unanimously to cut Mayor Rick Proctor’s pay to less than a third of his current salary at this week’s regular meeting.
Proctor, who made $65,000 in his first year as Rahway’s part-time mayor, will see his pay reduced to $20,809 next year.
Council members earn $8,043 per year, and the council president receives a $9,676 annual salary.
The mayor, a Democrat, and the all-Democrat council have been at odds for months. Proctor has been accused of allegedly trying to use his influence to get his wife hired as Rahway’s health officer, a six-figure job that Proctor himself held for nine years before becoming mayor.
The council adopted an anti-nepotism ordinance this fall, which Proctor vetoed in November. The council voted to overturn the veto this week.
