METUCHEN – As part of the Diocese of Metuchen’s 30th anniversary celebration, Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski bestowed the Regina Nostra medal upon clergy, religious and laity during a solemn celebration of evening prayer at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi Nov. 28. In all, 93 persons from the diocese were presented with the prestigious award.

The tradition was established in 1986 by Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, first bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese, to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the diocese. It has been awarded every five years since then.

Regina Nostra, in Latin, means “Our Queen.” Cardinal McCarrick, now archbishop emeritus of Washington, chose its name in honor of the Virgin Mary, principle patroness of the diocese under her title of Queen of the Heaven and Earth.

Five years ago, the bishop commissioned a new “soft and beautiful” image for the medal to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the diocese. As a result, artists in Milan, Italy designed and struck an image of Christ in glory crowning the Blessed Virgin as queen, inspired by a mosaic above the interior door of the duomo (cathedral) in Florence, Italy.

Regina Nostra recipients include individuals, and occasionally couples, who have been outstanding in their service to their parish or to the Diocese of Metuchen, which includes Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties. They are usually nominated by their pastors; in addition, a small number of medals are given by the bishop of Metuchen.
