LINDEN – Police have charged a Carteret mother and daughter with stealing five purses from Kohl’s Deparment Store on East Edgar Road on Wednesday, authorities announced.

Loss prevention personnel told officers that Amanpreet Saini, a Kohl’s employee, had given ten purses to her mother, Surinder Kaur, but only scanned five of them at the register. When Kaur passed all points of sale, she was detained until police arrived. Kaur was issued a summons for shoplifting the five purses, valued at $208.

When Saini came to police headquarters to pick up her mother, she was also placed under arrest and charged with employee theft by under-ringing merchandise, a fourth degree crime. Saini was also released on a summons pending a court date set for Dec. 7.

The charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
