PERTH AMBOY – Perth Amboy police were able to prevent a city resident from carrying out his threat to jump from the Victory Bridge Sunday night, according to Deputy Police Chief Benjamin Ruiz.
When they arrived at the bridge at approximately 10 p.m., Officers Danny Gonzales and Luis Perez spotted the man holding on to the bridge with one hand; he had placed his shoes and a coat on the ground. The officers spoke to the man and listened to his family problems and health conditions.
The man requested a telephone call be made to his mother. The officers did so and placed the call on the police car speaker. While he was focused on the conversation, five police officers pulled him back. The man was taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center for treatment and observation, police said.
