Buono Receives YMCA “Friend Of The Y” Award

Sen. Barbara Buono

TRENTON – The New Jersey YMCA State Alliance recognized Senate Majority Leader Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex) with its “Friend of the Y” award last month. On Oct. 6, Buono received the award at the annual YMCA Awards Dinner, held at the Forsgate Country Club in Monroe Township.

“Being a ‘Friend of the Y’ means being a friend to all that binds us together as a community,” said Buono. “In order for our children and our families to grow, we need organizations like this and the volunteers to nurture and support them, to foster the notion that regardless of color or creed, age or economic background, we can build bridges, come together, and see that the sum of our similarities and common goals is greater than any perceived differences. That’s what the YMCA is all about, and I’m honored that I can be a part of that.”

The New Jersey YMCA State Alliance presents its annual “Friend of the Y” award to legislators who support the YMCA in its mission to improve communities across the state. Buono said the YMCA provides stability for youngsters, from which her own children benefited.

“As a parent, I always felt comforted to know that when my children were at the Y, whether for after school programs, basketball or camp, that they were being cared for and their lives were being enriched,” said Buono. “Year after year, as technology and our economy and all of our world change, we can all count on one thing – the YMCA – as a constant giving us peace of mind.”

The New Jersey YMCA State Alliance is a not-for-profit association made up of 44 local YMCA facilities across the state. The association works to strengthen and enhance services available at individual YMCAs to further the mission of building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.
