Rahway First Graders Learn About Pets

RAHWAY — First grade students at Franklin Elementary School in Rahway were recently visited by ‘Cooper’ the hen. Students learned all about hens and how to care for a pet when they read the story, ‘Dan’s Pet’ by Alma Flor Ada. The story is about a baby chick that grows up to be a big hen that lays eggs and then has more baby chicks. After reading the story, first grade teacher Gail Andrews brought in her pet hen, ‘Cooper’ and visited all of the first grade classrooms in order to make a science connection with the story. Pictured here with Andrews and ‘Cooper’ are Kylie Callender, Caleb Santos and Kayla Fleurantin from Jennifer Ward’s first grade class. (Photo courtesy of Franklin School)

Congratulations to Gail Andrews, an excellent teacher who understands that education should include life experiences like the one she has provided for her students. I’m delighted that my book Daniel’s Pet would have been part of this wonderful project. That book, as well as it’s companion, Daniel Mystery Egg were written for my grandson Daniel, when he was a little boy. Daniel is now a Junior in High School and is planning to become a neurosurgeon. I hope the First Graders who read Daniel’s Pet will know that, with effort and dedication, they also can become anything they wish to be. They, and their wonderful teachers, are welcome to visit me and write to me at www,almaflorada.com
All best wishes to all who read this message.
