TRENTON – According to a report by PolitickerNJ, state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex) will not seek re-election as Senate Majority Leader.
Buono sent a letter to Senate President Steve Sweeney to notify him of her intent.
“Majority Leader is a position that demands concessions be made- concessions I am unwilling to make when I do not believe that they are right for the state and this party,” the letter said.
Buono had clashed with other Democrats over the plan to reduce public workers’ benefits through legislation this summer. She supported the workers’ right to collective bargaining.
Democrats and Republicans from both the state Senate and Assembly are meeting today to choose their leaders for the next legislative session.
