ELIZABETH — A 39-year-old man, currently incarcerated in Essex County, was charged this week in connection with a 2010 sexual assault in Elizabeth, Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow announced.

Anthony Sledge, 39, is charged with 1st degree kidnapping, 1st degree aggravated sexual assault, 2nd degree sexual assault and 3rd degree aggravated assault. An investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office sex crimes unit and the Elizabeth Police Department was launched in November 2010 after the victim notified police that she had been assaulted in a parking lot of an Elmora Avenue business.

The victim told investigators that she was walking home from a party when she was attacked by a stranger, dragged into an alley and assaulted. At the time forensic evidence was collected at the scene. Forensic testing by the New Jersey State Police and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office determined that Sledge was a match for the DNA evidence that was recovered, according to Romankow.

Sledge was charged at Essex County Jail and was given additional bail of $500,000.

This remains an active investigation and the prosecutor’s office urges anyone with information to call Det. Brian O’Malley at 1-908-965-3809.

These criminal charges are mere accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
