ELIZABETH – United Way of Greater Union County (UWGUC) has appointed six new members to the organization’s Board of Trustees. The new members are Dr. Barbara Gaba, Martin Melilli, Joe Nassif, Patricia Perkins-Auguste, Beatrice Romao and Stephen Theriot.
“Our new board members bring tremendous energy and talent to United Way’s Board,” said James W. Horne, Jr., President & CEO of UWGUC. “They all share a passion for advancing the common good in their community and I am proud that they have agreed to join us in our work.”
UWGUC’s Board of Trustees helps to develop new partnerships that allow the organization to address key needs in the community as well as create strategies that improve resource development efforts. The Board ensures that UWGUC adheres to all legal and corporate requirements, monitors the organization’s operations and ensures that a high standard of performance is upheld at all times.
Dr. Barbara Gaba
Dr. Gaba is the Provost, Elizabeth Campus and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Union County College with responsibility for overseeing the overall operation of the college’s Elizabeth Campus. In this role she serves as the chief academic officer and administrator of the campus providing leadership, vision and strategic direction to the campus, its faculty, students and programs.
In addition to her responsibilities as campus provost, she is active in community and civic affairs including membership with the Greater Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Elizabeth. She also served as the Honorary Chair for the City of Elizabeth Annual Women’s History Month Series (2010). Dr. Gaba serves on several other board of directors and advisory boards including the Chair Academy for Leadership and Development International Practitioners Board, Advisory Board for “Dean & Provost,” a national higher education newsletter, National Council for Black American Affairs, an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges and the New Jersey Ace Network.
Martin P. Melilli is a Regional Vice President with TD Bank. He is responsible for managing a commercial banking team serving customers throughout the Union and East Essex region of North Eastern New Jersey.
Melilli has 21 years of experience in banking, commercial lending and credit administration, with many years in senior management positions. Prior to joining TD Bank, he served as President of the Bank of Princeton in Princeton, NJ, where he propelled the de novo bank to profitability in just under two years. He also served as First President in Commercial Lending at Synergy Federal Savings in Cranford and as Regional Manager of Summit Bank/Fleet Bank, also in Cranford.
Melilli serves as Chairman of the Board of the Union County Economic Development Corporation and on the Advisory Board of SCORE.
Joe Nassif is a Global Business Leader and for over seven years been the Vice President of Corporate Purchasing for NuStar Energy, LP. In his current role, he is responsible for developing market focused growth strategies as well as building and motivating high performance teams to outperform competitors. Nassif has a Bachelors of Science from York College, a MS from Columbia University and a MBA in Finance from New York University, Stern School of Business.
Patricia Perkins-Auguste is a member of the City of Elizabeth’s Planning Board, instrumental in the economic development of the city and the State of New Jersey’s eastern seaboard. She has served on the board of national, state and local organizations concentrating on such issues as crime, public safety, affirmative action and economic development.
Perkins-Auguste has orchestrated community initiatives such as: establishing the Retail Skills Center to provide training and job placement; a Juvenile Curfew Program which provides counseling to violators; neighborhood economic incubators and a number of other programs which have elevated the quality of life for City of Elizabeth residents. In her role as Council Woman-at-Large, she has actively participated in numerous local and national youth programs focused on building young leaders and scholars; promote mentorship and address critical social issues. She has earned national recognition and received numerous awards and citations for visionary leadership, community activisim and economic development.
Beatrice Romao is a Vice President – Retail Market Manager with TD Bank. In her current role, she is responsible for managing a sales and service team of 14 stores serving the residents and businesses of Union County. She has 23 years of experience in the financial services industry including various management positions responsible for successful sales, service and operations.
She has been involved in and supported a number of community and non-profit organizations.
She is actively involved with Chambers of Commerce throughout the county and organizes volunteer efforts to maintain leadership involvement in the community.
Theriot is the Managing Partner of Deloitte’s Northeast real estate practice. He specializes in service to hospitality, property management and real estate holding companies. Steve has extensive experience serving REITs and other complex clients operating in the real estate industry. In addition, in his capacity as Deputy Professional Practice Director he assists clients with technical accounting and reporting matters.
Theriot has over 25 years of experience with Deloitte. Steve spent two years in the firm’s National Office Accounting Research Department where he assisted with the resolution of complex technical issues facing real estate entities.
The Board of Trustees of United Way of Greater Union County is committed to the welfare of the community, and are actively involved in making Union County, North Plainfield and South Plainfield a better place to live and work. The six new members join a member board that oversees UWGUC’s finances, grant making policies and practices, strategic planning and countywide outreach.
