SCOTCH PLAINS –Union Catholic High School’s Performing Arts Company will start its 2011-2012 season with the fall play, “The Miss Firecracker Contest.” Performances will take place on Nov. 3, 4, and 5 at 7 p.m.
“The Miss Firecracker Contest” centers on Carnelle, an irrepressible young woman who thinks that winning the local beauty contest will restore her soiled reputation and make her a “somebody” in her small Mississippi community. The family and friends who help her along the way are a dysfunctional bunch who tackle life in their own peculiar ways. The play features Maeve Lynskey ’12, Brandon Rotondo ’12, Danielle Gruskiewicz ’12, Meredith McAna ’12, Emily Dzioba ’14, Richard Ryngel ’15, Kate Carolan ’15, and Will Marsh ’15. The production is directed by John Rotondo ’07, who is in his third year of directing the Union Catholic fall plays. Set design is by Maryann Carroll Carolan ’86 and lighting design is by Jenna Lloyd ’09.
“It’s Little Miss Sunshine with a Southern twist,” says Rotondo. “Miss Firecracker is explosive. You don’t want to miss it.”
Last season the Union Catholic Performing Arts Company was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy, Maeve Lynsky ’10 for The Nerd and Justine Mujica ’09 for Something About Friendship. UCPAC also performed Something About Friendship at the off-off Broadway Manhattan Theatre Source.
Tickets for The Miss Firecracker Contest can be reserved at: www.showtix4u.com or purchased at the box office on the evenings of the performances.
