Newark Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Staff Sgt. Jorge M. Oliveira, 33, of Newark, was killed in Afghanistan while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, the Department of Defense announced this afternoon.

Oliveira died Oct. 19 in Paktika province of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 113th Infantry Regiment, 50th Brigade Combat Team, Riverdale.

Oliveira was an Essex County Sheriff’s officer who was serving a year-long tour in Afghanistan with the Army National Guard.
