JERSEY CITY — Senior forward Walter Avans (Roselle Park /Union Catholic) has been named the New Jersey City University Men’s Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the fifth time in his career. He scored the only goal for the Gothic Knights in a 2-1 road loss against New Jersey Athletic Conference foe Richard Stockton College on Oct. 1.
Trailing 2-0, Avans made it a one-goal game at 80:30 of the second half. After a foul outside the box, NJCU was awarded a free kick and made a quick restart, as Avans buried a sharp-angle shot from the right wing for his team-leading seventh goal and 18th points of the season. The goal was the 34th of Avans’ career and 78th point, tying him with Marc Palumbo (1999-2002) for fifth place in points in school history. He did not play in a 1-0 loss to Kean University on Sept. 28.
For the year, Avans also leads the team in assists (4), shots (29), and shots on goal (20). Among NJAC players, he ranks second in assists and assist per game (0.50), fourth in points per game (2.25), fifth in goals per game (0.88), sixth in goals and points, eighth in shots per game (3.62), and 10th in shots.
