EDISON-Here are some great memories of the Pines Swim Club from Ellen Liebson Porges:
“My brother and I were quite active there in the 1960s. My time at the Pines was the most memorable of my childhood and every year we waited anxiously for Memorial Day when the club would open for the summer. As far back as I can recall, the club was owned by the Callahan family, who also had that great corner cabana that we all admired. There was Ethel, the old woman at the gate, the basket room, and the Hawaiian Room. I vividly recall all the great lifeguards through the years and can’t help but wonder what became of them; George, Ray, Roy, Jay, Jack, Joe, Rich…They always put on great shows with comedy water ballet and clown diving.
“I spend every summer involved with the swim team. They had movie night where we kids would walk all the way up Route 27 to Mom’s Pizzeria or the ‘new’ McDonalds from dinner and then back for the movie.
“My brother and I spent a lot of time the past few years tracking down many of our former Pines friends because it was such a great time of our lives. Everyone we ‘found’ had the same feelings about the Pines.”
