NJCU Earns Tie, Loses Shootout In Tournament’s Opening Round

YORK, Pa. — Senior keeper Manny Lojo (Clark/Union Catholic) made four saves as New Jersey City University settled for a 1-1 double-overtime tie with McDaniel College in the opening round of the Holiday Inn Conference Center Soccer Classic, hosted by York College (Pa.) on Saturday.

NJCU (2-1-1) and McDaniel (1-1-1), meeting for the first time in their histories, went to a penalty kick shootout for the sole purpose of advancing one team to Sunday’s tournament championship game, and the Green Terror edged the Gothic Knights, 5-4.

Freshman midfielder Andrew Lopes (Union) provided the assist on senior forward Alex Ceron’s game-tying goal with just 1:48 remaining in regulation.

Senior forward Walter Avans (Roselle Park /Union Catholic) tallied a game-high six shots (three on goal).
