ELIZABETH — A Rahway woman was convicted of abducting a 3-year-old child from an Elizabeth store in 2008, earlier this week Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow announced today.

Yvonne Alexander, 57 was found guilty on two counts of kidnapping on Wednesday following a bench trial before Superior Court Judge Robert J. Mega, said Assistant Prosecutor John Esmerado who prosecuted the case.

Less than four hours after she abducted a child from the store on Broad Street in Elizabeth, members of the Elizabeth Police Department arrested Alexander, said Esmerado.

“It was an excellent investigation and outstanding police work,” said Romankow.

When investigators executed a search warrant of Alexander’s home they found a number of items relating to the crime, said Esmerado.

Alexander remains in the Union County Jail and faces up to 30 years in prison when she is sentenced on Dec. 2.
