EDISON – A North Edison health club is planning a dance-a-thon event to raise money to fight breast cancer on Sunday, Sept. 18.
Zumba instructors Liza Aninipot, Andrea Orlando, Serena Powels, Riza Geronimo and international belly dance sensation Warren Mayorga will lead participants through two exhilarating hours of hip-shaking, heart-pumping fun in the parking lot of Curves of North Edison from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Registration will begin at 10 a.m. All proceeds from the event will go towards the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, which raises money for education, outreach and diagnostic services.
Lilly Tune, the owner of Curves of North Edison, is planning this event in support of Curves member Mary Jo Barnello, who plans to trek more than 39 miles through New York City in the Avon Walk on Oct. 16 and 17. This will be the Metuchen resident’s fourth year walking. Last year she raised more than $11,000, approximately $3,000 more than she had raised the year before.
Barnello began participating in the walk after she lost a close friend to breast cancer. She has since begun to take requests from friends and acquaintances to dedicate her walk to them as well. Barnello has her grandchildren write each name on a pink sticky note heart and strings each heart to a pink crochet yarn strand. She said she is “famous” for her necklace, which has grown from one to three strands to accommodate all the hearts.
“These names are given to me by people everywhere and are a constant reminder of why I am doing this,” Barnello wrote in an e-mail. Barnello gets into physical condition for the event by working out at Curves. “I have been blessed with good health improved by working out at Curves,” she said.
Tune said she is excited to help organize this event. Last year Curves of North Edison raised almost $1,700. The cause is very dear to her heart as she walked with Barnello on her first walk in honor and memory of many friends and Curves members touched by this awful disease.
Curves is located at 3 Stephenville Parkway, Edison, which is at the corner of Stephenville Parkway and Park Avenue.
Registration is $20 in advance or $25 at the door of day of the event. For additional information, call Tune at 1-732-632-2025 for further information. Participants are asked to dress in comfortable layers and be prepared to move.
