Longtime Carteret Civic Leader Loses Battle With Cancer

CARTERET – Longtime borough civic leader Judy Leshko died on Sunday morning after a 15-year battle with cancer.

Leshko served as an aide to Carteret Mayor Daniel Reiman since January 2003 and was also the secretary of the Carteret Redevelopment Agency. She was the president of the Mayor’s Children’s Charity Fund, which raises money for scholarships and a variety of programs and services that benefit local children.


Leshko was chairwoman of the Carteret Democratic Party for over ten years and has been an elected Middlesex County Democratic Committeewoman since 2000. She was a past member of the Carteret Library Board and the Carteret Board of Education, and has been recognized by countless organizations and charities for her civic involvement and philanthropy.

Predeceased by her siblings George Bolte, Edward Bolte, and Bonnie Bolte, Leshko is survived by her husband of 26 years John Leshko Sr., and her son John “JJ” Leshko Jr. of Carteret. She is also survived by a nephew, Anthony Eaton; a sister, Ruth Bolte; and a granddaughter, Hailey Lynn Eaton.

The viewing will be held at Chubenko Funeral Home on Port Reading Avenue in Port Reading on Tuesday, Aug. 30 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the Chubenko Funeral Home, 625 Port Reading Ave., Port Reading followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Joseph R.C. Church, Carteret with entombment to follow St. Gertrude Mausoleum, Colonia.
