WESTFIELD — Bamboo Shoots, a full time Mandarin-immersion school for children ages 3-6, is the first of its kind in Westfield area and features an academic, activity-based curriculum through which children acquire fluency in Mandarin and learn traditional Chinese characters. The school offers preschool classes as well as a full day combined kindergarten-1st grade class.
“Our students will have the unique opportunity to acquire Mandarin in a supportive and nurturing environment, with a strong focus on high academic achievement and student leadership,” says Danielle Marino, school director. “We view language as a medium to learning other subjects such as music, art, science and math. We want to instill an excitement and confidence about learning language to serve as a foundation for further learning. We immerse children in the language.”
Marino, who has owned and operated Noah’s Ark Preschools in Westfield since 1998, also notes that “Mandarin fluency clearly gives children an advantage as they grow and prepares them for life in a multicultural environment.”
Bamboo Shoots is Marino’s answer to community demand for world language instruction in early childhood, and response has been enthusiastic since its recent inception. Several spots remain open for the September school year, and Marino anticipates that they will soon be filled.
