According to Linden Boxing Association Secretary/Treasurer Gary Luciano, “This is the twelfth consecutive year that we are hosting the Diamond Glove Tournament State Finals here in Linden and also the twelfth consecutive year that our friends from the Conoco Phillips Bayway Refinery are sponsoring the event. Without their sponsorship we wouldn’t be able to have this successful night of amateur boxing that annually supports a varied amount of programs for our city’s youth.”

This year, the Linden Boxing Association will be honoring the Dattilos, John and sons, Dennis, Robert and Jeff, the owners of Bayway Lumber Inc. for their exceptional commitment to the sport of boxing and the youth of Linden. The Dattilos have been intimately involved with Diamond Glove Boxing in Linden since its inception in the year 2000. During this time, the Linden Boxing Association has donated in excess of $370,000 to Linden Recreation-supported youth programs and has sponsored scholarships annually to graduating Linden High School students.

Expecting to be in attendance at this year’s championship bouts are Bobby Czyz, former world light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion; Emile Griffith, former world welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight champion; Chuck Wepner, former heavyweight contender, Lou Duva, the hall of fame boxing trainer and manager who has handled some of the greatest fighters in the world including 19 world champions and Tomasz Adamek who will shortly be fighting for the heavyweight world championship of the world.

Tickets can also be purchased at the Community Center Building, 605 S. Wood Ave., Linden until Oct. 13. Don’t forget your autograph books. For further information on the Diamond Glove Finals, call the Linden Department of Public Property and Community Services at 1-908-474-8600.
