“Service” Mother Seton Style

CLARK — For the past 19 summers, students and alumnae of Mother Seton Regional High School, Clark, have volunteered a week of their time at Camp Fatima of New Jersey. Camp Fatima is New Jersey’s only all-volunteer camp for children with developmental disabilities. The program is free to campers. Each summer 30 to 35 students and alumnae from Mother Seton Regional have experienced the “Fatimagic!” in one of two week long sessions for campers ages five through nineteen.

Each camper is assigned his or her own counselor who provides twenty-four hour a day individualized care, with the assistance of a team of registered nurses, lifeguards, counselor support and administration, as well as, kitchen, arts and crafts, sense room and activities staffs. All work together to provide a very supportive atmosphere for both the campers and the volunteers.

Mother Seton girls serve on many of the above staffs and continue to return to camp year after year to be part of this incredible experience. All staff members leave with having learned what they could not have learned anywhere else. Many have served over ten or fifteen years. Camp Fatima is a magical place. This summer 66 campers, 11 adult campers and staff enjoyed the magic of Camp Fatima which was enhanced by the magic of Harry Potter!

Sister Jacquelyn Balasia, an Assistant Principal at Mother Seton Regional High School and an alumna of the school, has volunteered for the past 19 summers and served on the Board of Directors for ten years. “To experience the love shared, the tender care given and the joy on the faces of the campers, touches the hearts of all involved” stated Sister Jacquelyn. Many volunteers expressed the sentiment that “Camp Fatima has been a life-changing experience for them.”
