ELIZABETH-Memories from Melvin Baker from the 50s and 60s: “If you played baseball in the summer, in the late 50s and early 60s, your schedule would have been:
“9 a.m. – play in Elizabeth PAL at Mattano Park; noon – play in Union County Youth League at Warinanco Park and 6 p.m. – play on various travelling times in the area, Bayway Post or Betsytown Post.
“On nights there were no baseball games you would go to Brophy Field in Elizabeth to watch Burry Biscuits or the Elizabeth Marauders play traveling softball teams, including the Linden Arians, from the East Coast League.
“Bowling alleys that were once in Union County: Elizabeth Lanes, E’Port Lanes, Summer St. Lanes was attached to a bar and Roselle Park Lanes was on Westfield Avenue and was attached to the rear of a candy store.
“Haynes Lanes was on Route 1 in Newark which is very close to Elizabeth, Rahway Lanes Rahway Recreation Lanes, if I remember correctly, and Sherman Ave. Bowling Alley was on the second floor of a business.”
More to come!
