UNION COUNTY – County Manager George Devanney will retire effective Aug. 1. He was appointed to the position in 2002, following a four-year tenure as deputy county manager. Devanney, nephew of state Sen. Ray Lesniak, has been a public servant for 27 years.

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is expected to meet soon to discuss filling the position. Deputy County Manager M. Elizabeth Genievich also announced her retirement, effective Feb. 2, 2012. She plans to remain to assist with the transition.

Devanney said that he plans to “seek new challenges” and explore new opportunities in the private sector. He also noted that pension system changes and a desire to spend more time with his family factored into his decision.
