CARTERET – On Tuesday, Aug. 2, neighborhoods throughout Carteret are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 28th annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event.
National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Carteret Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit, will involve over 15,110 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 37 million people are expected to participate in America’s Night Out Against Crime on Aug. 2. The event is also supported in part by Target, the national corporate sponsor.
National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
From 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Aug. 2, Carteret residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with their family, neighbors and police.
National Project Coordinator Matt Peskin said, “This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer nation. On Aug. 2, we invite neighborhoods nationwide to join us in ‘Giving Crime & Drugs A Going Away Party.’”
Carteret residents who wish to participate in National Night Out should call Susan Skoczypiec, coordinator of the borough’s event, at 1-732-541-4127. Residents have held barbecues, block parties, and even birthday parties. If you would like the police to make a special stop at your residence during the evening, call Skoczypiec to have your name put on the list. Free National Night Out promotional items will be handed out while supplies last. July 29 is the cut-off date to sign up.
Carteret won its eighth national award for its National Night Out Event in 2010. More than 875 residents took part.
