HIGHLAND PARK-More memories from a former resident: “Between Second and First Avenue was a Packard new car agency, Schwinn Bicycle store, a dry cleaners and two gas stations. Across the street on the south side of Raritan was an A&P store, a bar and rooming house.
“First Avenue to Cedar Avenue contained a deli, newspaper and grocery store. Cedar to Adelaide contained only a gas station. Before the YMJA came to Highland Park the property was originally huge estate homes of the people who either built homes in Highland Park, or started businesses.
“Somewhere around 1945, WCTW Radio Station was built in the wetlands of Highland Park. At the time, Jack Ellery was the announcer and the program went on 24/7. The small building is no longer there as Donaldson Park spread it wings.”
