EDISON – Last week, students at the Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison took part in special ceremonies to mark the transition from one grade to the next.
The eighth grade class graduated to high school during its Stepping Up Ceremony on Wednesday night, June 8, in the AP Room.
It was a memorable evening that began with a processional to “Rondeau” and a flag salute and rendition of “America the Beautiful” by the eighth grade and the Middle School choir.
Daniel Gallagher ’15 of Edison, one of the 40 graduates, presented the Streib Cup to Noah Fischer ’17 of Parsippany. This award is given for the highest achievement in public speaking among sixth and seventh graders.
Julia Linger ’15 of Cranford won the eighth grade public speaking contest and the right to be the speaker at the Middle School Stepping Up Ceremony. Linger’s speech and a solo performance by Cecily D’Amore ’16 of Scotch Plains to “A Light Inside” preceded the eighth grade awards.
Daniel Spear ’15 of Bridgewater won three of the awards, including the prestigious Kilpatrick Award, which is presented to the best all-around eighth grade student. Criteria for this award include academics, athletics, citizenship and leadership. Spear also received the Elwell Award for being the outstanding male athlete and the Alethea Marder Pond Award for excellence in the fine arts.
John Anderson-Schmitt ’15 of Scotch Plains won the Chandler Award for the eighth grade student with the highest overall average for the academic year. Briana Crawley ’15 of Rahway received the Lum Award for the outstanding female athlete. Nikki Mugambi ’15 of Edison received the Alethea Marder Pond Award for excellence in the performing arts.

MOVING ON UP … Twenty-four fifth graders graduated to Middle School during the Fifth Grade Moving Up Ceremony on Wednesday, June 8 in the AP Room. The program began with the processional to “Prince of Denmark’s March” and a flag salute. Andrew Webster, Head of School, gave the welcome and the third and fourth grade sang “For Good” from Wicked. ON TO FIRST GRADE … The Kindergarten Class of 2011 at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School held its Graduation Ceremony on June 7 in the Lower School Library.
