SCOTCH PLAINS – Union Catholic High School graduated 194 members of the Class of 2011 on Saturday, June 4th in the Union Catholic Gymnasium. A Baccalaureate Mass was held on Friday, June 3 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Scotch Plains.
The Class of 2011 earned $16,173,293 in college scholarships. Within the class there were seven AP Scholars, six New Jersey Rising Scholars, four National Commended Students and one National Hispanic Merit Recognition Program Scholar. The Valedictorian is Sean Sarra of Linden who will attend Princeton University and the Salutatorian is Sean Siburn of Westfield who will attend Schreyer Honors College, Pennsylvania State University.
A number of awards were presented at the ceremony. The awards and it recipients are as follows: School Consultative Award: Vincent LaRocca of Winfield Park, United States Naval Academy; Spirit Award: Dylan George of Scotch Plains, Texas Tech University and Marcus Sancho of Plainfield, Neosho Community College, Kansas; Jane Albert Award of Service: Sean Siburn of Westfield, Schreyer Honors College, Pennsylvania State University; Hart Award: Kevin Major of Metuchen, George Mason University, Michael Marotti Dedication Award: Brian Hartnett of Clark, University of Notre Dame and Joseph Seebode of Clark, College of the Holy Cross; Principal’s Award: Colleen Cassidy of Scotch Plains, Providence College; Kevin A. Apuzzio ’02 Memorial Award: Brian Butterly of Clark, Seton Hall University; William J. Kelemen Scholarship: Timothy Connell of Clark, Villanova University and Megan Tosato of Mountainside, Loyola University, Maryland.
John Del Giorno, an Emmy Award winning airborne reporter for Metro Networks and WABC-TV and member of the Union Catholic Class of 1988 served as commencement speaker.
